Thank you Vicky for the link. One caveat: in the case of the 1850 instructions to enumerators, that Census.gov official website does NOT have the actual instructions! For some reason, surely a mistake, the images they link to are the census law passed by Congress, not the instructions. The .gov site used to have a link to an actual copy of the instructions, but that page has been removed and the link is broken.

I previously transcribed the instructions for 1850 and 1860 (which have significant differences) when I wrote a guide to the "The 1850 and 1860 Census, Schedule 2, Slave Inhabitants" which is in the AfriGeneas Library:
