Question for David Paterson

For David E. Paterson:

Mr. Paterson, I just discovered the Research at the National Archives and Beyond podcast, and I listened to the interviews with you about probate records. What wonderful information! I am working on documenting the names of enslaved persons in antebellum probate records of Liberty County, Georgia, and you filled in so many details of how the probate records work.

I have a question I didn't hear addressed. Do you know how estate appraisers were generally selected? What I'm wondering is whether I can draw any conclusions from who was selected to do the appraisals, especially whether the appraisers might have lived near the deceased person. I see that some names occur over and over, but in other cases, someone might have only done appraisals for a few people.

Thank you in advance, and thank you for all that I'm learning from you. (I'm getting ready to read your article on indexing slave names.)
