Re: N M HOWARD, slave, Autauga Co, AL, 10 Oct 1864

There was a 6 year old slave named "Buck" who first belonged to Mark Howard, Autauga Co, AL and father of Nehemiah Milton (N M) Howard.

Some time after Mark Howard died in 1852, "the Negroes" were divided, according to a probate document dated 28 Sep 1860 and Buck was assigned to Mrs C. C. Howard. By the time Buck was hired out in 1864 he would have been about 10 years old and the Civil War had only 1 more year to run its course.

It would seem unlikely that this "Buck" would have a surname of "Mason."

Can anyone else enlighten us on this situation? Thank you.
