Milton Howard/Smith DavenportIA 1920

This is a newspaper article about my Great Grandfather, Milton Howard (Smith). Milton worked 54+ years continuously, from 1 Mar 1866 to well past 1920, for one employer, the Rock Island Arsenal, Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL.

Milton was born to a free mother in c1845, Muscatine Co, IA. He and his family were kidnapped, taken to AL and forced into slavery c1850 to work on Autauga Co Pickett and Howard Plantations. Milton escaped the Howard Plantation c1860. Milton was a member of USCT and spoke French, German, English and possibly Italian and other languages.
