Harriet PORTER 1854, Hopkins CoKY-1871, MonroeCoMO

Hello All,

I have a question for this forum about the attached birth records. Harriet Porter is listed as a mulatto born 6 Oct 1854, Hopkins Co, KY. Her father or owner is recorded as Henry Porter. Which is he, father or owner or both? Is he likely the father because Harriet is enumerated as a mulatto? If she were enumerated as Black, which according to the "ditto" marks she is not, then would Henry Porter be just her owner and not her father? After looking at all the people of color births on this record, would not Harriet's "mulatto" designation imply 1 white parent? Was Harriet a slave owned by Henry Porter?

Henry Porter owned 11 slaves in Hopkins Co, KY according to the 1850 US Fed Cen Slave Schedule. One, a 27 year old female, may have been Harriet's mother, Sarah Ann Porter, although Sarah Ann is not recorded on Harriet's birth record - that space had been left blank.

I also read that that Henry Porter was a slave owner in 1860 US Federal Census for Muhlenberg Co, KY, with 9 slaves, of which 6 were "Fugitives from the State", including a 6 year old girl who is a good fit for Harriet Porter. Where would I find more information about these "Fugitives?"

Henry Porter appears to have moved from Hopkins Co after 1854 to Muhlenberg Co by 1860.

Thank you!
