Pierce Mason Butler of Edgefield, SC, former governor of South Carolina, bought his dwelling plantation near Benton, Bossier Parish, LA in 1840. Already attached to his plantation when he bought it were the following slaves:

Moses, (age) 70; Mary, 30; Henry, 35; John, 10; John Bellinger, 35; Mima, 20; Abel, 20; Ben, 18; Davy, 50; July, 25; Washington, 27; Solomon, 40; Martha, 10; Hannah, 30; Lucien, 6; Lucy, 35; Long John, 35; Joe, 20; Solomon Epps, 50; Moses Boatwright, 50; Griffin, 35.
