Re: Estimating Ages in Inventory of Estates
In Response To: Re: Estimating Ages in Inventory of Estates ()
I wanted to share some additional information as well as a strategy on the question I asked.
As a rule of thumb male slaves with the highest value are usually skilled individuals such as blacksmith, carpenters, etc. Male slaves in their prime and are typically in the age range of 20-30 years are the second highest. Women of child bearing age are usually in the age range of 18-30. They have the third highest value. Individuals valued under female of child bearing age are usually young adults who age range would generally be somewhat 12-17 Most enslaved individuals valued at $0 are usually elders or disabled. The value is based on the actual or potential productivity of the individual.
One way to test this theory is to compare other inventories of estate from the same county and time period. Hopefully they will include ages.
