AfriGeneas Slave Research Forum

Re: Slaves-John Smith Rutherford Co. TN

Lisa,

I am also researching the slaves of Colonel John Smith. His son, Robert Henderson Smith, was the owner/father of my great great grandmother, Julia Smith Cox. In the 1850s, Julia Smith and John Cox Sr. (a white man who lived in the DeSoto County, Mississippi neighborhood of R.H. Smith) ran away to Mexico where my great grandfather was born. The family settled in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Julia Smith told her granddaughter that her mother was the slave of Col. Smith. I found a court document online that gives an account of who Julia was and how she and John ran away.

I am trying to figure out which of Col. Smith's slaves was Julia's mother. Julia said her mother was born in Virginia so she had to be born before the move to Tennessee in 1806. It has to be either Polly, Julia, Hannah, Kisiah, Patience, or Eliza.

Please let me know if you come across any more information.

Thanks.
