Re: Lovick family in Craven County, North Carolina

I would like to know more about the slave origins of my ancestor Nelson Lovick myself. I suspect that he might have been a slave of William Lovick in Craven County. But, I need to actually go the courthouse and do some digging. A local historian informed that Nelson Lovick was one of several ex-slaves buying small parcels of land on a settlement known as "Woodbridge". Woodbridge was a settlement created for the purpose of helping ex-slaves becoming economically stable by a Minister from Connecitut named Edward Bull.
There is a local legend that the Lovick plantation was burned to the ground by the Yankees in the region. If that is true, perhaps one of my ancestors were some of the slaves freed early.
