Two British slave databases online

From one of my Saint Domingue research lists.

Subject: Two British slave databases online

This is the website for the “Legacies of British Slave-ownership” project and database. The database is searchable by individuals, firm name, addresses, and notes. Included in this database are names of slave owners, who were compensated a total of £20 million for slaves in British colonies that were freed in 1833.

Be sure to look for your French ancestors here, as the scope of the project includes the British Caribbean, Mauritius, and the Cape. Some of the British islands were once French, and the French residents continued to live on them under British rule.
Such is the case with Mauritius (Île Maurice out in the Indian Ocean), where i found one Julien BRELET, a possible brother of my ancestor (François BRELET, who went from Nantes to Saint-Domingue). Julien was compensated some £56 for one slave. The database does not have any biographical notes, and, unfortunately the registers for this colony during the French period are not online. But the information gives me a new direction in which to search. It could be my BRELETs were more ‘far-flung’ than I had imagined!

Could your French ancestor have been living in one of the British colonies? I don’t believe there is any information about individual slaves, but I did not explore the database thoroughly. Check it out!
