AfriGeneas Slave Research Forum

Slaveholder-Zebulan Vance d.1890

Date: 7/24/2012, 3:05 pm

I have information that a family member did research on the family surname and it was KNOWN that Zebulan was the owner of my Vance Ancestors. Zeb was a popuplar confederate soldier, judge and Governer bn in Buncombe NC.
This is my delima.
1. Every picture I have googled is in black and white. I would like to see something of him with color on the canvas. I would also like to see pictures of his male siblings.
Family story says he was the owner and he or a sibling was the father of the children of at least 4 of my ancestors. One son of my gggrandma Adelaide is said "Elbert Vance a possible son of his was a large tall man, with red hair and freckles". Another brother, James Vance was said to be very light skinned also. Elbert was bn 1861 SC and James bn 1868 SC. We all know this did not stop the abuse of x-slaves.
I know Zeb died in 1890 so of course there would be no wills. I would like some advice on what records to request from the NC Archives that would give information about his wealth, land and personal property. I asked for estate records but the NC Archives redirected to someone that redirected me to some one--if you know what I mean.
