Rita Wood Bates was born 1/1837 and died November 1937. She was 110 years of age and died in her right mind. She was interviewed a few months before she died to recollect the history of slavery. Interviewed by Judge Thomas Huey of Jefferson County Alabama (Birmingham). She was the slave of Obadiah Washington Wood where Woodlawn Alabama derives its name.
