Roberta -- I have a large database of people held as slaves in Stokes county from the 1790s to 1865, plus sometimes information on them after emancipation. There were a number of Bitting slaveholders, but Benton is probably Marshall T. Benton. The two white families were closely related by marriage and business, and their slaves often intermarried as well (for example, Winston Bitting and Susan Benton, who began living as man and wife in 1847 and later lived in Greensboro).
