Re: SC Freedmen's Bureau Microfilms Digitized
In Response To: Re: SC Freedmen's Bureau Microfilms Digitized ()
Jason, There are 106 reels of microfilm for the Records of the Field Offices for the State of South Carolina, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, 1865 - 1872. Beaufort is identified as a Subordinate Field Office. There are 90 reels for Georgia. Low County Africana has digitized 4 reels for SC #89, 103, 76 and 77 ...and 2 for Savannah Georgia reels # 82 & 83, not sure if others have been digitized. NARA microfilm rolls numbers South Carolina #56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, and 62 contain information about activities of the Bureau in Beaufort (SC) Field Office(there is also the possibility that info about individuals in that area also appear on other rolls). A variety of information is contained on these various rolls: List of Destitute Freedmen and Orphan Children to whom Rations were issued
The Descriptive Pamphlets published by NARA gives an overview of the Bureau's activities in South Carolina and Georgia and can be seen at the Lowcountry Africana site. Selma
