AfriGeneas Slave Research Forum

Vaughan, Essex, White, in Nelson Co. VA

Hello:

Lately, I noticed several requests and answers concerning Nelson County, its people and planations. Until I spoke to Derek Nichiolas a few weeks ago, I have not been active on this forum, thus my lateness in replying to a few requests especially from Barbara Joyner.
Since I shared data with Derek as he explained his goals re: multiple inter- marriages among our folks in Massies Mills, Nelson County, VA, herein is some material to assist all of you. You may find a duplicate of earlier submissions by me and others.

According to my original resources, an old Bible in my possession, here are the writings: Franky Vaughan, born 3 Jan 1882 and Anderson White, born 11 Jan 1826. Their children: Betsy was born, 7 December 1855; Saundres, born 25 September 1857; Harvey, born 12 1861; Sally born 24 November 1862; Alexander born 11, November 1864; Wyant born 16 July 1852; and Louis White born 29 Auagust 1855. All proved to be slaves of William Massie, according to the slave ledgers on record with the University of Texas, Austin and Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA.

When I pulled the 1870 Federal census, I found Anderson's mother, Rachael living with his family. All of these census were under the surname of White. At the time, I didn't know who Betsy was which was cleared up by a cousin who actually lived with her grandmother Betsy, aka Elizabeth changed upon her migration to Pennsylvania. Maggie, aka Marget Essex was my grandmother, Thomas White, her brother (I suppose born prior to Betsy's marriage to Manual), and Sallie White was Betsy's sister, justs as stated in their family Bible.

Betsy married Manual Essex, part of the Daniel, and Orange family who lived in 1870 with Patrick Strange, also in Nelson County. My grandmother, \ Margaret Essex had several siblings, all of which migrated to Pennsylvania where each died. Maggie died at 104 years of age. She was our historian, late in her life leaving a video tape of her beginnings along with several Bibles with written data therein. Oh yes, there's plenty more after 10 plus years of research, which I'm hoping to gather into a book where all may have access to share.

I hope this has been of help to those beginning their research in this area.
Please call upon me if I may be of further help. By the way, this sharing has been a positive item in my genealogy research, especially from folks like Selma Stewart, Art Thomas, our beautiful Denise Oliver- (forget me Denise, this is a sign of old age) and many others. None of these teachers ever expected anything back when sharing...their love for reaching out to others was sufficient gift. I hope my sharing will have a similar effect on those in need.
