Hello:
I'm trying to locate the slave holders for my family and I could use your advice.
In 1870, my family Richard (b 1825 in VA) and Kitty/Catherine(a) (b 1835 in VA) Moore lived in Yalobusha County, Mississippi.
In 1850 & 1860 I searched for slaveholders in Yalobusha County and located the following:
John Moore, VA, Nottoway County, VA
Lewis Moore, SC
Mr/Mrs. E A Moore
WD (William Driver) Moore, Anson County NC
I see matches based on age/sex on several of the slaveholders mentioned above.
I started my search with WD Moore but couldn't reconcile his journey from NC to MS when census records showed that my famly migrated from VA. I contacted some of WD family and they didn't see an obvious VA connection. After further research, I'm wondering if he could have owned my family in 1860. Please note, that a lot of my family members named their sons, Sidney/Sydney and I noticed that one of the decendants of WD Moore was named Cornelius Sidney. Could mean something or nothing, but thought I would mention it.
I am currently looking into John Moore who was born in VA and migrated to Yalobusha. It appears that after 1850, he moved from Yalobusha to Grenada. I can confirm that my family didn't relocate with him when he left Yalobusha for Grenada. I saw on records and confirmed with John's family that he traveled with slaves from VA to MS. Please note, that John's wife's family name was Gooch Jones. I noticed that some of my family lived near a Gooch (black) family in 1870.
I have not begin to research Lewis Moore or Mr/Mrs. EA Moore.
What are some other genelogical tips that I can look for that could help me narrow down which slavemaster to begin my search?
Your expertise in this matter will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
T. Houston
