I am trying to research the origins of Taylor Slaughter of Palmetto, Georgia for a friend of mine. I am new to this type of research.
Taylor is in the 1870 census for Goodes, Campbell County, Georgia. There is only one other Slaughter in Campbell County. There were a few slaveowners named Slaughter in Georgia in 1850 and 1860. The nearest was in Troup County. There were 2 men in the 1850/1860 slave census that might have been Taylor. Neither is listed as a Slaughter in Troup County in 1870.
The town in Troup County was on the same railroad line in the 1860s as Palmetto. Is it unreasonable to think Taylor might have been one of the two black men in the slave census? Is it more likely that he was from Campbell County?
I am open to suggestions.
