Re: "Free White Mulattoes" in 1860

In 1662 Virginia passed a law that "children got by an Englishman upon a Negro woman shall be bond or free according to the condition of the mother". In 1691 they would also pass a law that if any English woman being free shall have a bastard child by a Negro she shall pay 15 pounds to the church wardens"...there were additonal laws passed with additional penalties over the ensuing years (see Black Laws of Virginia by June Purcell Guild.

So I don't think it was a secret to the folks at the time these events were happening.

1803. Chapter 6

The marriage between Benjamin Butt, Jr. and a certain Lydia Bright, who is of respectable family, and was at the time of the marriage to be unsullied in her reputation, is dissolved because Lydia has been delivered of a mulatto child and has publicaly acknowledged that the father of the child is a slave.
