my great grandmother's sister, Anna Allen, did the same thing in the early 1900's. She left her family in Montgomery, AL and went to Chicago where she eventually married a white man. Story is that he knew but his children didn't - he had been married before. Don't know if she had children. She would go to Montgomery once a year to visit her mother and sisters. Eventually the mother died and all the sisters moved north. None of them communicated with her except for my grandmother. In the 1930's they received the last letter saying she was sick and hoped to see them all again in Heaven. Have no idea what her married name was. Her parent's names were Dock and Eliza Allen.
