I purchased copies of all of the misc slave papers of Orange county from the Raleigh archives. It includes the filed emancipation records. There was one thing that really jumped out at me.....most of the emancipated (I have found in these records )took a surname that was NOT the surname of their former slaveholder! I hope the book has an index of all of the names of the former slaves as well as the names of the former masters. I was very shocked to find this. I have posted several of the emancipation records I have transcribed onto the FPOC board, and will place more there as I find them.
