Re: Mazique, August & Sarah

Hi Cynthia,

Here's a blurb about the plantation where my ancestors were enslaved and where my 2nd great grandmother's uncle brought the horses:

Interviewed by WPA, owned by John D. Magill:
Murrells Inlet
106 Richmond Hill Plantation
Archaeological Sites NR
Richmond Hill Plantation was owned by John D. Magill,
who was notorious for his brutal treatment of slaves
and his inefficiency as a plantation manager. Slaves were
poorly clothed and fed, punishments were cruel and
frequent, and runaways were either shot or hanged.
Twenty-eight of Magill’s slaves escaped to Union troops
when federal gunboats came up the Waccamaw River in
1862. Magill died in 1864, and his son declared
bankruptcy and sold the land. The plantation house,
overseers’ houses, and slave houses had all burned by
1930.

I've also included a link to my 2nd great grandmother's slave narrative; click on Margaret Bryant:
