Just grasping at straws. Ransom (b.1855 NC) and Millie (b.1857 NC) were most likely brother and sister, owned by the JOYCE family in Mayo, Rockingham, NC. They are both found with the JOYCE surname in 1870, working as servants in the white household of Anderson Heggie. They are also surrounded by black and white JOYCE families. No mother or father has been identified for either of them. I thought maybe the mother was freed prior to emancipation? Maybe Ransom and Millie were orphans and just hanging around. Like I said, just grasping at straws.
