You know what, it just so happens that Warren Co. is one of my major places of interest for research because I have so many ancestors, and relatives still there, and I have quite a few records for that County. I think I have something that will interest you GREATLY; also, in checking the Freedmen's Marriages from Barnetta White's book, there were none for a Branchus or anything like that, so I would say it was a great possibility that he was already dead by the end of the Civil War when all slaves were emancipated. I have found the Cohabitation Records contained in Ms. White's book to be a wonderful tool in discovering whether or not a person listed as a parent on a former slaves death records was possibly still alive after emancipation.
Anyway, here is an entry from "Warren County, North Carolina, Will Abstracts 1779-1844" which should be of interest to you (I think it adds 2 more generations to your line) and others researching their families in the area (by the way, it's an extremely long abstract, so I am just including the parts with names and important data pertaining to them)I have put 2 asterisks ** beside the names that will interest you:

Codicil 30 Apr 1807
the following slaves are to be emancipated: OLD MAT & wife PATTY, and BURTON.
Wit: WILLIAM VERSER, NATHL. MACON.
An observation on the above is that it looks like at least 2 slaves names (OLD LINDER, OLD ROBIN) have been repeated, am assuming it was the same on the original will.
