Re: LAWTON Slave holder
In Response To: Re: LAWTON Slave holder ()

Assuming that in 1850 Patience was a slave of the Lawton family, and not one of their relatives, I have narrowed down the list of her possible former slave owners to 8 men and 1 woman using the Slave Schedule and a list of Lawton descendants.

I'll send you more via email, but I thought I should post the outline of the Lawton family here to help other researchers.

1850 Slave Schedule for Beaufort Co., SC

1) W A Lawton St Lukes Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (Same as Winborn Asa Lawton below - brother of William Henry) Winborn a Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina
One of his plantations was named Oak Island. He is not to be confused with his cousin, the older Winborn Lawton, of James Isl., SC (1782-1861) whose family was chronicled in "How Grand a Flame".
Th eowner of Oak Island Plantation, and a platation on May River.

2) A J Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (This is Alexander James Lawton)

3) James S Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (James Stoney Lawton)

4) Jane Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (Mrs. Jane Mosse Lawton, James S.'s mother)

5) Joseph M Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (Joseph Maner Lawton - brother of William John)

6) Robert T Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (Robert Thermistocles LAWTON -brother of James)

7) William H Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (William Henry Lawton - son of Joseph Maner)

8 ) William J Lawton St Peters Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (William John Lawton - son of WIlliam Henry - brother of Joseph Maner)

9) Jos. A Lawton St Lukes Parish, Beaufort, South Carolina (This is the Rev. Joseph Alexander Lawton of Allendale Co., SC. I couldn't locate him in the census - he was married to Martha S. -- she had to take a legal case before the Supreme Court in the 19th Century -- see below.)
Owner (with wife) of Hill Place, Beaufort Co., SC (former property of James Stoney), Calibogia Plantation in Beaufort Co., SC, and Roselawn Plantation in what is now Allendale County.
