The general population increased from 7 million in 1810 to 31 million in 1860. But much of this I'm sure was due to immigration, which was not so restricted as the importation of slaves. Also, I am guessing from the census bureau figures I'm looking at now, that slaves in non-state territories were not counted as part of the US Population until they joined the union as a state. Still, the slave population of Alabama increased from 2000 in 1810 to 435000 in 1860, whereas states in the upper south did not grow anywhere near as quickly. Anyway, the research I'm doing is really just fact-checking. This is all to support one sentence in the book, but we want to make sure we're getting our facts straight. Thanks.
