Re: Carter/Nomony Hall
In Response To: Re: Carter/Nomony Hall ()

Gail, good news, John Barden culled every source of the hundreds/thousands he looked at, and compiled mini-biographies in all instances where the available info was sufficient to do so. I have his dissertation at hand, and will be glad to do 'look ups' in the Appendices for anybody out there.

Especially when only first name, it would probably work best if people copied the name(s) from my original postings, so that I look up the right people. With birth years and the names of relatives provided by the various 'Carter lists,' I've had some luck looking for individuals in Ancestry databases, and so would be happy to check this resource for particular names.

I think that what we need is an Excel database of all the names and info about each, that could be put into the afrigeneas library. If this would not run into 'intellectual property' issues vis-a-vis John Barden's dissertation, I can get started right away on putting this database together. Maybe the moderator(s) will have guidance on this point??

Following up on the previous postings of names: The (1791) Deed of Emancipation was signed 8 July (1791), but the list was assembled as of January 1791 . Here are the individuals on the Barden final compiled list with birth year of 1791+. These individuals will not likely be discussed in Barden's dissertation, but there will no doubt be exceptions, so please feel free to ask for look-ups on any of them. I've arrange in groupings of birth years (xxxx) and then dates of emancipation [ ], and this ordering seems to indicate some logic to the process Carter and his attorney followed.

The 1782 law Carter was taking advantage of to initiate this process applied to slaves under the age of 46. Within the 1791 document, this would make the cut off birth year around 1744-45

II. Age 46 and older, as of 1 Jan 1791, so not on the 1791 Carter handwritten list, but on the Barden cumulative 'final' list. For purposes of look-ups upon request, these individuals may well have brief biographical info in the Appendices of Barden's dissertation, so please feel free to inquire. The 'unk' is in Barden's original, indicating that he was not able to pin down a precise date for ultimate emancipation:
