Hi Pamela.
I've got many, many EVANS families that are connected in Warren, Halifax, Wake and Granville Counties in North Carolina. I don't show a GEORGE & WINNY EVANS, although I did take a look at the 1860 & 1870 census for them. I didn't see them in 1860, but they were in the 1870 census where GEORGE EVANS shows that he was born about 1847. I notice they were in Weldon, Halifax Co.in the Eastern District, but most of my Halifax Co. EVANS were from Brinkleyville, the Western District. Have you located GEORGE prior to 1870? If they aren't in the census prior to that date, they were more than likely slaves at that time. All of the EVANS that I found in the Western portion of the state seems to have always been free, so I've been able to research them further back in time. The main problem I've had prior to 1850 is verifying which families some of them came from. But there's usually something else that I come across that helps with that, it just may take a little time.
