Mathews/Matthews in VA, DC, MD

In Response To: Re: Caroline Co., VA: Slaveholder Albert R. Flippo (Gail Swan)

Trying to find the crucial piece of your Mathews family puzzle has left me with more questions about Susan, Eliza, and Bettie. However, I did find Wm. H. Mathews, 22, and his wife Molly Montague, 28, with daughter Sally Mathews, 3, listed in the document of African Americans cohabiting in 1866 in Caroline County, VA. William had been a slave of Phil L. Robb and Molly’s “last owner” was Wm. A. Buckner.

In addition to the neighboring Mathews households in Port Royal, could any more of the following individuals be part of your Mathews family? Is it possible that Susan Mathews/Matthews, mother of Eliza and Bettie, is counted more than once in the same year’s census? In 1870 she could have been working in the DC-Maryland area while maintaining her household in Port Royal, VA—most likely with help from the neighboring family headed by William and Molly Mathews. This way of life was common for African Americans employed as "live-in" domestic servants.

Considering the discrepancies routinely found in census data, it’s even possible that the two women in Baltimore in 1880 could be the same woman counted at home and also at her place of employment. Even more confusing, the names of Susan’s two daughters, Eliza and Bettie, are both popular diminutives of a common given name, Elizabeth.
