Re: Nappier Nelson County, Va. Cohabitation List
In Response To: Nappier Nelson County, Va. Cohabitation List ()
There is one lising for a NAPIER marriage in the Nelson County Cohabitation Register. Cohabitation List cover the time period immediately after the Civil War and emancipation usually up to 1866, and list those relationships of individuals who were enslaved and legally not allowed to marry prior to emancipation. Which census year record did you find John and Minerva Nappier?
July 9, 1866 (This is the date the marriage was recorded in the register)
Number: 616 (It was the 616th marriage listed out of total of 643)
Husband: JACOB NAPIER to Wife: AGGY HUGHES
Although called a "marriage" in the Register, it is doubtful that there is an official county record from 1830, this is when they began living together as Man and Wife. There is a very good chance that either one or both were "owned" by one DANA JACOBS at the time this relationship began, and possibly until emancipation.
I took a look at the 1870 census and found Jacob and Aggy there was a son John living in the household, he was 11, is this yours?
