In my experience with death certificates is that they oftened contained wrong information. Death certificates is based on the memory of the person who is alive at that time. Look and see who the informant was for William Patterson's certificate and if it was a child of William or a grandchild or something like that, then that person may not have known the real name of William's father. Alex may have been a nickname. And if Alex died before Eliza did, then Alex's real name may have gotten lost in time.
For example; I was named after my great grandfather, Tony Kent. My mother knew him only has Tony. But doing my research, I discovered that his birth name was Stonewall Jackson Kent. But he stop using Stonewall sometime after 1880 and used Tony only. So Cater/Cato could be your ancestor because everything else matches. Do you know any of William's sisters and brothers names?
