Have you obtained a copy of his death certificate? That would probably reveal some additional information. Also, You could check to see if the local newspaper where he died has archives and you could search for an obituary. What was William's wife name? Did she die before or after him?

From Dawn's post you can narrow down your search to Summerville and St. George, SC. Do you know Sadie or Caroline's married names? I tried to find William in the census but did not see a family with a father named William and with sons named William and Robert and daughters named Sadie and Caroline.
