Basye Family History
Looking for descendants of Elizemond and Marshall BASYE. My gg-grandfather, Yearly Basey, who was a slave was instructed to go to California to look after William BASYE, son of Marshall. Upon his return to Missouri in 1851, Yearly and his family was finally given their Freedom.
His manumission papers are noted in Book #22 dated 1852-53, pg. 366 of Manchester County, Missouri. Elizemond and his family migrated from Kentucky to Missouri in 1850 from Bourbon County, Kentucky.
My question is why did Elizemond set aside $5,000 for my gg-grandfather and his family? Why was there a restriction that only a tenth of the $5,000 would be paid if Yearly or his family chose to migrate to Liberia? Does that imply that Yearly was from Liberia?
What was going on in US history that would have led a southern white family to move from KY to Missouri
