Re: The Lima/Faial/Fayal Family - Cape Verdeans

This weekend I received ship manifests for my grandparents (Joao Antao Santos and Maria Encarnacao) who also came over from the Cape Verde Islands (into New Bedford, Massachsuetts). These records are housed at the New Bedford Library - Genealogy Section (New Bedford, Massachusetts). My grandmother was on a ship named "ACCAO" which arrived in New Bedford from Sao Nicolau in 1921. My grandfather came over in 1920 on the Wm. H. Draper which came into New Bedford from Fogo. It took me a while to understand the manifests but when I finally figured it out I saw that there was much useful information (relative in the islands & who they were going to live with in the U.S.) I learned that when my grandfather arrived in this country he was in possession of the sum of ten dollars & that my grandmother said that she could read and write Portugese which wasn't true (she often lied about things like her age & pretended she couldn't understand English to get better business deals) But she couldn't read or write & I had to teach her how to write her name when I was eight years old. She had formerly used an X. Anyone whose folks came in from the CV Islands should contact the New Bedford Library. Mr. Cyr researched for me for a contribution to the Library of $20.
