BETWEEN RACE AND ETHNICITY - CAPE VERDEAN AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS 1860 - 1965 - BY Marilyn Halter, University of Illinois Press: ARRIVING VESSELS FROM THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS TO NEW BEDFORD, MASS - Looking at Halter's list it appears that -
I think that Cape Verdeans (African/portuguese) largely (if not exclusively) came into New Bedford & Azoreans(white Portuguese) probably came into Ellis Island but I'll check that theory with Mr. Cyr. Was Rose Azorean or CV? On p 69 Halter says "the packet boats' ... 'were owned and operated by the Cape Verdeans themselves" ... The vessels were described as "floating shipwrecks" ... "a cross between a caravel of Columbus & Huck Finn's raft" ... (but) "the Cape Verdeans were surrounded by their own compatriots". It was a month long voyage.
