In Response To: GREEN, Lettie 1856-1927 SC ? ()
Hi, How are you? I think I found Lettie in the 1900 and 1910 census of Orangeburg SC. 1900 Orangeburg SC in the town Poplar>> Green, Littie Born Oct 1965? age34 widowed 10 child. born 5 living born SC
Ancestry.com has Lettie's name spelled Witt in this Census index. Now in this Census, Moses Percall (its spelled this way in the census) along with his wife Harriet and chidren Essix?, John, Junie? and Mart are living in the city of Poplar as well, not far from Lettie.
Green, Littie age 50 widowed 10 child. born 5 living/born SC/parents born SC Farm Laborer
Now again, Moses Pearsall and wife Harriett is living near her in the city of Elloree. Now you stated that Moses was the father of Lettie's children. But in both censuses she states that she is widowed. From what I am told, it was not unusual for a woman to say that her husband was dead when she was not married to the father of her children. Now if Lettie's maiden name was Green then it is a possibility that she did not want it known that the father of her children was in fact married to someone else. It is interesting that in the 1900 census and the 1910 census, Moses is living near Lettie. I could not find Lettie in the 1880 census nor the 1920 census. Thats does not mean she is not there, it is just that I could not find her. But I did find a death record of Lettie on ancestry.com>> South Carolina Death Index, 1915-1949 Record Name: Lettie Green
You can order the Death Cert. from SC if you like. I hope this Helps, Tony
