SC ANCESTORS CHURCH HOME

I recently went on a bus tour to SC and and was fascinated to see there were praise houses and a Church for worship. I always figured my ancestor's were Baptist but now I am questioning that assumption. I have no death certificates for the SC ancestor's so I have no idea what their place of worship or burials could have been. Finding legit information and then spending the money to obtain this information is becoming expensive at this time. My ancestor's lived in Shaws Creek SC 1870 - 1880. I've been told that is now Trenton SC. Johnston SC is the next area I found them from 1900-1930. What I would like to know is has anyone been successful in finding their ancestor's church home in SC? How did you do so. I did find a website that listed all the churches now existing in this area, but black churches have a reputation for not keeping written records. I have written a letter to a few of them and addressed it to the church secretary in hopes I find information about living cousins as well as deceased family. Other than this I have no idea what else to do.
