I see that there is one Clowney researcher:
In my notes "Black Residents of Greenbrier, Monroe ...West Virginia" I note that the Journal of the Greenbrier Historical Society, Vol. 6, #2, 1993 p. 57, has a Clowney entry from the Greenbrier County Records Deed Book, Vol 1, 1814-1819 (transcribed by Larry Shuck)
Also, the GHS has what I call a Free People of Color and Enslaved Persons Collection (court records) which contains a statement of ownership dated 11/30/1814 wherein James L. Clowney states that in 1810 by a gift of his father Samuel Clowney, there residing in the Union District of South Carolina he became possessed of a Negro man named Isaac and also called Essie. About June 1810 he and Isaac came to Lewisburg (Greenbrier County, West Virginia) but he returned with Isaac to South Carolina before a year had expired where he remained until 10/15/1814. Isaac is disabled in one hand due to injuries and about 31 years of age & born in South Carolina".
