Considering just the information you gave, the first thing that comes to my mind is that possibly some of the children were not her biological children. They may have been the children of relatives or neighbors. Look around the census at her neighbors, and look closer into her relatives families. Keep in mind that just because it's written in the census, doesn't necessarily make it so.
