The information about the counties is certainly helpful. You must have read my mind as that was my next project in figuring Anna out. I'd seen the 1880 census information, and was holding the 1870 info for Anna as 'hopefully'--smile.

Jesse enlisted in the CW in Tennessee, that's where TN comes into play. He was born in Madison County, Alabama and was a slave of Levi DONALDSON and his wife Charlotte. Apparantly, after the War, he returned to Tennessee.

Thank you so much for your time. This will certainly give me some things to work on while trying to locate a possible obit et cetera.

A couple of those name variations I hadn't thought of either, again, a big help!
