Re: My Mother Edna Jones, NY 1959?
In Response To: My Mother Edna Jones, NY 1959? ()
All of the suggestions given are excellent. Are you currently living in NYC or nearby? If so have you visited the area? I am a Harlem resident. I would also suggest that if it is possible you could actually visit the building and talk to the building superintendent or other long time residents of the building or long time residents of her street. Harlem is a close knit community there are many Harlemites don't leave Harlem if they remain in NYC. There are many residents in apartment buildings that have been there for many years. It is very common to find residents that have been there before 1950.
Also you may find someone that has kept in touch with your mother or other members of your family if they have moved away.
I was able to find a cousin that I was out of touch with for over 30 years. I went to the street that I knew he used to live on. I didn't know which building it was. I rang the bell of an apt on the 1st floor of a building on that street. A young lady answered by coming to the building entrance door. I asked her if she had lived there a long time for 20 years or more. She answered that she didn't but her aunt did. Her aunt came to the door. She informed me that my cousin lived in that building and gave me the apt #. He kept the same apt that his parents had over 30 years ago. This is very common all over NYC. I had a wonderful reunion with him and his wife. His brother lived right around the corner and I was reunited with him as well.
2 weeks later the same cousin was reunited with his son that he had not seen in 22 years. He also just rang his door bell one day.
Best wishes to you in your search.
