In addition, a colleague of mine has been retained by the Danish government/VI to translate the VI census (to be digitized), which includes slaves etc. The records are not completed as of yet.
As Denise mentioned, the name MADURO is associated with Spanish Caribbean Islands including Cuba. Maduro as I am sure you know is also a Sephardic name. The third oldest synagogue in the Caribbean is on St. Thomas. Maduro is also associated with Curacao.
Many people of African descent have Sephardic names such as da Costa, Nunez, and Zamora. Vidal, Cardoza, Dominguez, Lopez (s), Henriquez etc.
