Please be aware that all slaves were not on plantations; many slaves were held by small farmers who had a few and sometimes only one or two slaves. Moreover, many people who were listed as mulatto did not have one white parent and one African (or African descended) parent. Yes, originaly a mulatto had a European and an African parent, but, over time, a person with two (or even one) white grandparent might still be considered mulatto.
