I have an ancestress that was listed as octroon, her husband is listed as mulatto. I was born in 1935 in NYC and my birth certificate lists me as white? I found out that the doctor who delivered most of my family members decided that on his own. (So much for the one drop theory.) Oh! yes, when I look in the mirror I see an AFRICAN-AMERICAN woman looking back.
