I did that one time and I found a relative. But, I didn't write. After gaining up enough confidence, I called. At that time, I was in my early 20's and was not quite as genealogically aggressive as I am now. It took me several weeks before I picked up that phone. The person I called had the same odd name as my great-grandmother's brother. Turns out, he was a grandson of that brother. He was an elderly man and was happy to hear that someone was researching the family. I am glad that I made contact with him because he died the following year.
