Afraid to continue research - need advice

In 1967, after nine years of marriage my mother learned that she was the 3rd Mrs. Richardson - my father had 2 other wives. When she learned this she left my father and we moved to Canada 39 years ago.

I have had no contact with any of my father's kin but I have been able to piece together some information about my father. I know his parent's names, his place of birth, his US Navy service, his death certificate (which names the woman he was married to at the time of his death) and I know where he is buried.

This is as far as I've gone. Although I am dying to know more about my father and any other Richardson relatives I may have, because of the circumstances of my birth, I am reluctant to go forward and attempt to contact potential relatives who may have never known of my existence or may not be entirely delighted to learn of my existence.

Has anyone here encountered a delicate situation such as this? If so, how did you handle it? I'd appreciate any suggestion on how to procede.
Thank you, Barbara
