One of the possible reasons for the absences of the men may have been work. I know I've heard stories from my GrGrandmother about how when money was really tight that sometimes her husband had had to leave Marshall, TX to go to other places where he could actually find work. My GrGrandfather did Construction work in the 1930's by trade but, sometimes it was hard to find that work so he might have to resort to picking cotton, going down to Louisianna to cut cane on the everglades and at times riding the railroad cars to go North to find Construction work of which he would send home money on paydays so that the family could pay land taxes, daily food and the bare necessities. Migratory for the purpose of finding work is probably a good bet for some of those men.
