In Response To: Re: Devan Look Up Request ()
Harriet Devan and her daughter Emma show up in the 1880 census in Perry, Illinois. Joseph Devan and his family are in Randolph, Illinois in the 1880 census along with Mahala (Hill)Devan. Richard must have died by then.
She is listed as widowed. My guess is that Harriet may be a daughter of Richard's since her birth is listed in 1830. She is much older than the other children listed for Richard and Mahala.
I couldn't find any of the Devans in 1860. The assumption that I am working under is that they were owned by Benjamin Devan in Wilcox, Alabama and they migrated to Cape Girardeau MO immediately after the Civil War since I did find the marriage record of Richard and Mahala, 8/26/1865 in Cape Girardeau. Or they were sold by the Devans and already in Missouri. Don't know.
Funny thing is all the children of Richard and Mahala are very young. 18, 16, 11 and on down. Richard is 64 and Mahala is 50 in 1865 so I find that interesting. Wondering if they are the grandchildren? Either way they are definitely my ancestors.
