Powell and Banks in Ar.
After 7 years searching for my grandmother I found her. I was told by my father that her name was Mertise Powell. That was what I lookeed for and kept running into brick walls. To shorten this, I found her by accident and the story is very complicated.
In 1910 she is listed in the Phillips County Arkansas census as Mapple Powel living in the home of her grandparents Duncan Montgomery. But Duncan was her greatgrandparents because he is the father of Amelia Montogmery who married Henry Powell and they had sons Lemon, Frank (and more but these are the two I focus on). So Duncan was Lemon's grandfather making Mapple his greatgranddaughter.
Farther down on the same page, Mapple is listed again in the home of Lemon and Rosetta Powel ( some places the name is spelled with two Ls then just one). There is another daughter, Cleopha. On another page in yet the same year, county and township, I found Rosetta and Cleopha Powell listed in the home of Zilphia Jones which was Rosetta's mother. Rosetta is listed as a widow. Huh? Mapple isn't in this home. So I went back to the 1900 census and looked up Zilphia Jones. Yes she is there with her husband Cato and children, Rosetta being one of them. They also lived next to the Powells. Okay, connection made. But what is going on with Rosetta and Lemon?
Then his brother is listed with his wife Violet who I had thought were Mertise's parents until I finally read an obituary of a lady whose's children I had gone to school with. I had had this obituarty in my possession for over three years before I read it. It listed this ladies parents as Frank and Violet Powell! I called my friend who told me that Frank had a brother named Lemon who had been married to a lady named Rosie and that it had been a bad marriage. Okay back to Lemon and Rosetta, they were Mertise's parents and Mapple was truly Mertise.
So I try finding Lemon and Rosetta in 1920. Both Frank and Lemon have disappeared from the area. But I have a copy of both of their 1918 Draft Registration listing them with their wives and what area they should have been in. I just can't find them. I did a search using just their first names and found a Lema Powell with a daughter named Vanilla and other people living with him. No wife Rosetta or daughters Mertise, Mapple or Cleopha. I did a search for Zilphia and found her with her son Maceo and granddaughter Mattie B (Mertise?).
I couldn't find a Violet or Frank that had children with the correct names. So I did neighboring county search and found Rosetta Middleton in St Francis County. Listed as stepchildren were Cleora, Cora, Beatrice and Clarence Powell...no Mattie, Mapple or Mertise. but she was listed in Zilphia home, okay.
Still couldn't find Frank and Violet. But in the 1930 census when I did the search for Lemon, I found Lemon Jr in Monroe County with Rosetta and a different husband, Jim Banks. Also listed were the other children with the exception of Cleora and of course Mattie. So was this Clarence in 1920 really Lemon Jr using his middle name? So Lemon couldn't have been dead making Rosetta a widow in 1910 if he was still fathering children with her in 1912.1916 and 1918 as the 1930 census indicates. Plus he registered in 1918 for the draft!
The other thing is that I still couldn't find Frank and Violet on the 1930 census. I was looking at the information on my grandparents trying to figure out what the census taker was trying to do with her name (it looks like Myrttllee crossed out but she is listed in the census as Myrtle. Anyway I happened to look down again and saw Frank and Violet Powell but the census index wouldn't bring them up. My friend/cousin who had told me about them in the first place couldn't find them either so we looked up first names and found out they were incorrectly indexed as Parnell. Went back to the previous census looking for Parnell but no luck. Can't find them on the death record for Ar although I did find Zilphia. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lemon (I think pronouced Leh-mon) was born in 1880 and Frank in 1881. Rosetta was born in 1895-96.
Thanks to whoever can help.
By the way, no wonder I couldn't find my grandmother. All the different name spellings, Mapple, Mattie,Myrttlle, on my father and uncle's SSN applicaton its spelled Muddlle Ruddle (no joke)and on her death record its spelled Merdie. Again, thanks for any help or suggestions.
