I hear ya about the 1890 census loss. We have to find substitutes - like voter registration rolls.

I agree with you about migration patterns and the need to follow them. Art taught me a lot about VA to OH migration, and I was surprised to find Loudoun VA to Pittsburgh in my tree - as you pointed out - most of the move was driven by available jobs.
