Re: William and Evaline McCaleb Mckenzie

Hi, Linda.

I do not know if this will be of any importance, but in the Rhea County, Tennessee Marriage Records of Colored Persons 1866-1879, there was listed a William McKenedy who married Ciller Henry on March 22, 1877. The marriage was performed by Rev. John Howard. I suspect that the McKenedy surname was actually McKenzey (McKenzie).

In 1917 in Meigs Co., Julia McKenzie, age 56, died.
Her father was Elbert Thompson, who was in the 1870 Rhea Co., TN census. Elbert was my gggrandfather. Julia's death certificate number in Meigs Co. is #16.

In the Meigs County, Tennessee Census and Marriage Records, 1850 Through 1900, there is a Hannah McKenzie (B), age 52, in District 2 of the 1870 census. In District 6 of the 1870 Meigs Co. census was a James McKenzie (B), age 23.

In the 1880 Meigs Co. census, I see Hannah McKenzie again. Her age is listed as 69 and she is in District 3. I also see your Bill McKenzie and family. They are in District 4. Also in District 4 is listed James McKenzie, age 33, and family. Their family is listed as being black and mulatto.

In the 1900 Meigs Co. census, James R. McKenzie, age 55, and his wife Mary, are listed in District 6. Also in District 6 is John McKenzie, age 49, his wife Julia (age 35), and children Edward (14), James E. (9), and Mary B. (5). These families are both listed as black. I think that John's wife Julia is the same person as my gggrandfather's daughter. Edward McKenzie is listed as having been born in California.

I'll write more in a later post.

Anita
